An EU social network governance initiative with tangential AI framing - low priority for APS AI practitioners.
Key points
- EU Commission workshop explored next-generation human-centred social networks, interoperability, and alternative business models.
- AI is mentioned only in passing as part of broader EU digital infrastructure context - not the substantive focus.
- Limited direct relevance to Australian federal AI governance work; primarily an EU digital markets and democracy item.

The European Commission hosted an exploratory workshop on 28 May 2026, in collaboration with the Project Liberty Institute, to examine conditions for a new generation of human-centred social networks in Europe. Discussions covered how existing EU frameworks - including the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, and proposed 28th Regime - could support emerging platforms, as well as alternative business models, interoperability standards, and digital identity tools. AI is referenced peripherally as one of several 'innovative technologies' alongside broader digital infrastructure themes. The workshop feeds into the Commission's European Democracy Shield initiative.
